Shadia R Habbal is currently a Professor of Astronomy at the Institute for Astronomy of the University of Hawaii. She was recently awarded the UH Board of Regents Excellence in Research Medal in May 2023. Her research accomplishments include the leadership of an international group of scientists and engineers, called The Solar WInd Sherpas who embarked on observations of the solar corona during total solar eclipses starting in 1995, and who have completed 20 expeditions, including the 2024 April 8 total solar eclipse. Her research has been supported mostly by grants from the US National Science Foundation and NASA. In addition to her academic career, she has also been serving as Scientific Editor for the Astrophysical Journal since 2012.”
