The 2012 CT Space Grant Fall Kick-Off took place on Friday at the Pratt & Whitney Museum Hanger in East Hartford and was a resounding success for students and companies alike! The event saw students from ten academic affiliates and industrial companies from Connecticut. Guest speaker Paul Barrow took the stage to talk to students about his work at the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) promoting small/medium sized industrial businesses in the state. Barrow was very adamant in his presentation in communicating to students the opportunities available to them in the fields of manufacturing, science and engineering. Program Director Dr. Tom Filburn and Associate Director Mary “Cater” Arico from the University of Hartford spoke to students about multiple Space Grant awards including Student Project Grants and Industrial Internships. Dr. Al Gates (CCSU Campus Director) gave students a taste of his annual Helicopter/UAV Workshop with a brief slideshow accompanied by videos from previous workshops, and even treated the audience to a test flight of a four-rotor remote-control helicopter in the Museum Hanger. After the speeches, students then enjoyed light refreshments and made their way to company booths, where they were able to learn about past and present projects as well as make business connections for the future.
